Sguash Greek
Sguash GreekSguash, one of the most popular and delicious vegetables that we plant in the spring season and harvest in the summer. The squash crop belongs to the same plant family as the cucumber, cantaloupe and watermelon with which it shares similar characteristics. Pumpkins are eaten boiled, roasted and fried and are a key ingredient in many favorite summer food recipes such as pumpkin pie, briam and stuffing. They have significant nutritional value, few calories and a high content of plant fiber, potassium and calcium vitamins. Growing pumpkin is considered quite easy. We strongly recommend it to novice growers, as it produces abundantly and quite quickly. Even if we don’t have a garden, we can plant pumpkins in a pot on the balcony. Let’s see in detail, what care is needed to grow the pumpkin in order to enjoy the most delicious pumpkins from our garden. The early planting of the pumpkin is done at the beginning of spring with ready-made plants that we have obtained from a nursery or that we prepare ourselves at the end of winter in a special nursery. If we want to grow pumpkins in late spring, we can plant the pumpkin seed directly in the ground, since at this time the temperature of the soil is suitable for the seed to germinate.
Pumpkin Large
Pumpkin LargeBefore planting pumpkin seeds, you should let them soak in warm water overnight. For cultivation, you need a container with a diameter of 10 cm to 12 cm. Two pumpkin seeds are planted per container. To do this, the pot is filled with soil one finger’s width below the rim. With the pointed end down, the seeds are pressed about two centimeters deep into the soil. The container is then placed on the windowsill and the first shoots will begin to appear after just a few days. The optimum temperature for the germination of pumpkin plants is 20°C to 25°C. To grow properly, it is important that the young plants are in an environment with constant warmth and enough light. As soon as the first true leaves appear after the vegetative leaves, and these have grown to the edge of the container, the weaker of the two seedlings is cut. Only the strongest plant is allowed to grow so that it can be placed outside in the garden later. But of course, both seedlings can remain in the container to be planted outside later.
Coriander
CorianderCoriander is an annual herb with a strong smell. During the flowering period the plants can reach a height of 20-140cm. The stem is upright and green in color, while during the flowering period it turns violet or even red. The stem of mature plants is hollow, while the diameter of the stem at the base of the root is over 2cm. Alternate compound leaves, with three lobes -3 or more toothed lobes. The leaves during the flowering period turn violet or even red. The inflorescence is a compound umbel. The flowers have 5 petals, colored pink or sometimes white. The fruit is spherical or oval with a diameter of over 6mm. It prefers fertile soils, while in the first period of its growth it requires a sufficient amount of moisture, but after the growth of the shoot it is very resistant to drought and is considered a dry crop. High temperatures and sunshine during the flowering period increase the essential oil content.
Cumin
CuminCumin is cultivated in Argos and the surrounding villages and is sown every year in January or February, on slopes or on strong sands and ripens in May – June. In other words, it ripens somewhat earlier than anise that has a similar culture. With the difference that cumin is dry.
Cumin seed
The field where we will sow the cumin should not produce many grasses, nor should it be shaded by trees. It is plowed three times deep with a pithami and in the third plowing we harrow it well with an iron harrow to straighten and rub the soils well. Then we sow the cumin in the fields together with fine river sand and cover the seed with a local harrow.
Watermelon
WatermelonWatermelon is one of the most popular and refreshing fruits with a unique sweet taste that we enjoy in slices, in fruit salads, in refreshing juices, while in some regions they also make it a spoon dessert. The watermelon fruit is smooth on the outside, light or dark green in color, with hard skin, while many varieties have characteristic ridges. Internally, the characteristic red color of watermelon fruits is due to lycopene, an antioxidant substance also found in tomatoes and grapefruit. Watermelon is an annual crop that is planted in early spring or early summer and is considered a demanding crop for a novice grower. It has significant water and fertilization requirements, and needs a lot of experience to give us rich quality production. we plant in late spring, the young watermelon plants that we have established in seedbeds since the beginning of spring, or we get ready-made plants from nurseries. The watermelon, like the melon, grows and bears fruit in warm periods. If we want to plant watermelon later, early summer, we can plant the watermelon seed directly in the ground. By direct planting in the field, the watermelon plant shows better rooting and gives better fruit production.
Carrot
CarrotCarrot, one of the most delicious and nutritious vegetables that we plant in the spring and autumn season. Famous for the sweet, crunchy and aromatic taste of its fleshy root, the carrot is a favorite food for young and old. It grows in the ground with its leaves protruding above the soil, as is the case with beetroot, radish, onion and garlic. The carrot is eaten fresh in winter salads along with cabbage and lettuce, but also cooked in various recipes, such as in the traditional bean salad. We can also make carrot cake, thanks to its sweet taste. Carrots need relatively cool conditions to grow and perform well, as well as plenty of sunlight. Ideal temperature conditions for carrot cultivation are between 16-18°C. Carrot cultivation is relatively resistant to winter frost, while at high temperatures that exceed 25°C the growth of the carrot root stops, it becomes woody and its color fades.
