Sunflower, characteristics and needs of the plant!

No plant reminds us more… of summer than the “Sun”, which even its name reminds us of this season. The plant literally loves the sun and shows it, as its flowers follow its daily course every day. Its scientific name is Heliantus annous, the English Sun flower and the Greek Helios or Sunflower.

It is an annual plant that produces a main trunk, while it can easily reach 4 meters in height. In the summer months, its large flowers (up to 20-25 cm in diameter) with an intense yellow color appear at the top. Its flowers are very durable and in their center are produced the well-known sunflower seeds.

It thrives in the climate of Greece and grows in any type of soil, as long as it is rich in ingredients and has enough moisture. The only care it needs, apart from frequent watering, is support when it gets too tall. It is fertilized at the time of sowing and when flowering. This is one of the most favorite plants of the summer, so dare to host it in your garden.
