Lettuce Red Lola
Lettuce Red Lola
Lola is a cold season plant that grows best in low temperature conditions. Ideal growth temperature is 14-19°C, while high temperatures cause the early development of the flowering shoot. When planted in autumn, winter and spring we look for a sunny position on the balcony, while in the summer months it is more shaded. Also, we choose a relatively sheltered position from the strong north winds of winter. We must point out that the lola is less tolerant of very low temperatures than the classic lettuces, of the romana variety. cultivation of lettuce can be combined with strawberry, cucumber, onion, garlic, radish and tomato and thus result in very efficient crops. For example, between the lettuces planted every 30 cm, we can plant onion heads or garlic cloves to complement our salad with spring onions and garlic.
Lola lettuce needs frequent watering as we need to keep their substrate relatively moist. Excessive humidity can have the opposite effect and cause disease development problems. The most critical period is during the initial growth of the plants and we must ensure uniform moisture at a depth of 10-15 cm. The frequency of watering is higher in periods of high temperatures so that the lola leaves are cool and the flowering stem does not grow quickly. Regarding fertilization, we incorporate well-digested manure or organic nitrogen fertilizer every 20-30 days, peripherally, at a distance of 5 cm from the lola plants. A tablespoon of manure or a teaspoon of organic fertilizer is sufficient.
